Answer: A geothermal heat pump works essentially like other heat pumps, say air source or water source ones. But the only difference is that its source of heat is present under the earth surface. An air source heat pump absorbs heat from the atmosphere. A water source heat pump takes it from bodies of water on the surface or underground. A geothermal heat pump has loops in which water-based or refrigerant-based anti-freeze solution is circulated. The fluid absorbs the underground heat and moves it up to the heat pump unit. This heat is used to cool the house.
